La familia de origen italiano, se instaló en Piedmont a mediados del siglo XVII, donde en 1859, Giovanni Gaja fundó su primera bodega en Barbaresco.
Posteriormente, en 1994, se inauguró la bodega de Pieve Santa Restituta en Montalcino, para la producción de vinos tintos complejos y elegantes.
Dos años más tarde, adquirieron la bodega Ca’Marcanda en Bolgheri para complementar su producción vinícola.
